2008 : Cape York

G’day, Welcome to my 7 part film series titled “Cape York Adventure”.

In June 2008 I departed Cairns and spent 3 weeks weaving my way along the corrugated tracks of Cape York in my 200tdi Land Rover Defender 110 Station Wagon.  I drove my way up through the Daintree, Lakefield, Cape Melville, the full length of the Telegraph track through Heathlands, and up to the very tip all solo!!.. That’s right, no large 4×4 convoys or passengers to worry about. Just me, my camera and my Defender.   So sit back and enjoy the beauty of Cape York with me.

Daintree National Park

Daintree National Park was the first stop on my 3 week journey.

Cape Melville National Park

Probably my favourite park I visited.. the views were magnificent. It was so peaceful and still out there.

On my way out of Cape Melville I decided to take a slightly different route to the one I drove in on… in hindsight it was not a good idea! Waste deep in murky crocodile infested water 😮  But I learnt my lesson.

Lakefield National Park

Lakefield is Queensland’s second largest National Park. It’s a 4-5 hour drive from Cairns.  Some great spots are Red Lilly Lagoon where the Lotus lilies abound, and attract in many birds.. and birdwatchers!  The Nifold plain has an eerie silence with the Magnetic termite mounds gazing out over the vast grassland.

Jardine River National Park

Jardine River National Park and the Heathlands Resource Reserve are home to the infamous Overland Telegraph Track aka the Old Telegraph Line (OTL).  I drove the full length of the track starting at Bramwell roadhouse and ending at the original Jardine River vehicle crossing. I explored Gunshot Creek, Cockatoo Creek, Sheldon Lagoon, Fruit Bat Falls, Eliot falls and Twin falls.

Continuing on I explored Cannibal creek, Cypress creek, got bogged at Nolan’s Brook aka Bridge creek and had to recover my Landy, and made it to the end of the line, the Jardine River.

After crossing the Jardine River, I explored the WW2 wrecks around Bamaga, later making it to the beautiful community of Seisia. With the sun rising I took my final drive north to the Tip of Cape York! The northern most point of the Australian mainland.

Trouble at the Tip

While exploring the Somerset Track near the tip, I blew apart one of my rear shock absorbers and had to remove it and reposition the coil spring which had partly popped out before limping back to Seisia to try and find a spare. I tried all the wreckers and mechanics with no luck so a new shock was flown up from Melbourne. It meant an extra 4 days stuck in Seisia… and that was fine by me!  🙂
