Flora River Nature Park

Flora River – a weekend escape close to Katherine.

I took 2 days away from Katherine and drove 122km south west to Flora River Nature Park, traditional name Giwining. The last 36km of track is gravel suitable for 2wd during the dry season. This is a small park with a beautiful little quiet campground at Lurrngurl with showers and toilets. Two nearby short walks lead you down to the Djarrung and Kathleen falls on the Flora River. The river is spring fed with the classic emerald green water colour.  Unfortunately crocodiles inhabit the area. I saw one watching me while walking the track so definitely no swimming. Limestone in the water precipitates and forms Tufa dams, along with forming layers on sticks, leaves or animals in the highly mineral rich waters.
